Q&A:

Q: What do you do on a Vegas ICO outing?

A: Our outings typically take place on weekends but occasionally we have a partner agency that requests weekdays. We organize day hikes to nearby locations including Red Rock Canyon, Mt. Charleston and Valley of Fire State Park.

Q: Who are your partner organizations?

A: We partner with a number of great organizations, including the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth plus city and county recreation centers.

Q: What do our Sierra Club volunteers do?

A: Inspiring Connections Outdoors teaches participants a variety of basic outdoor skills and basic Leave No Trace principles. Volunteer “outdoors leaders” can either be a trip leader or assist the trip leader in sharing any outdoor skills that they may have in an age-appropriate manner.

Some other volunteers focus on behind the scenes activities, such as making lunches, data management and communications.

Q: How do I become a volunteer outdoors trip leader?

A: To become a Sierra Club Inspiring Connections Outdoors leader, a volunteer must first:

  • Be a Sierra Club member (For a limited time, join online for just $15, via this link: Donate to the Sierra Club. LVICO may cover this coast for those who qualify.)

  • Assist on two ICO trips

  • Complete first aid and basic CPR certification (training costs are complimentary), if not already certified

  • Agree to a standard criminal background check, paid for by the Sierra Club

  • Agree to and sign our Ethics Agreement

  • Read and agree to a Child Abuse Recognition and Prevention module or provide prior certification (CARP)

  • Complete our online Outdoor Leadership Training (training is arranged and paid for by the Sierra Club)

Q: How to I volunteer for behind-the-scenes, non-outings tasks:

A. Requirements vary, depending on the position or tasks.

  • Sierra Club membership may be optional

  • A standard criminal background check, paid by the Sierra Club, depending on the position

  • Agree to and sign our Ethics Agreement, depending on the assignment
